AML Leukemia Symptoms

Can Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Be Found Early?

For many types of cancers, diagnosis at the earliest possible stage makes treatment much more effective. The American Cancer Society recommends screening tests for early diagnosis of certain cancers in people without any symptoms.

At the present time, however, there are no special tests recommended to detect acute myelogenous leukemia early. The best way to find leukemia early is to report any possible signs or symptoms of leukemia (described in How is Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Diagnosed?) to the doctor right away.

Close follow-up is important for patients with a known genetic abnormality that increases their risk of AML, for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes, and for cancer survivors treated earlier with certain chemotherapy drugs.
