Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) from Benzene Exposure
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer that starts from white blood cells (called lymphocytes) of the bone marrow. It then invades the blood. In time, it can also invade other parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, liver, and spleen.
Another chronic leukemia, called chronic myeloid leukemia or chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), also starts in the bone marrow, but in a different type of blood cell. Chronic myeloid leukemia is further discussed in a separate document which you may read by following the previous link.
Leukemia is different from other types of cancer that start in organs such as the lungs, colon, or breast and then spread to the bone marrow. These cancers that start elsewhere and then spread to the bone marrow are not leukemia.
Doctors have learned that there are probably 2 different kinds of CLL. One kind is very slow growing and rarely needs to be treated. People with this kind of CLL survive on average 13 to 15 years. The other kind of CLL is faster growing and is a more serious disease. People with this form of CLL survive only about 6 to 8 years. The leukemia cells from these 2 types look alike. But recently developed laboratory tests can tell the difference between them. One test looks for a protein called Zap-70 in the cells. Another test looks for a substance called CD38. Patients whose CLL cells contain high amounts of Zap-70 and CD38 have a poorer prognosis (outlook for survival).
